K, a first-year student at the Faculty of Law, Waseda University (graduated from Waseda Honjo Senior High School)
After graduating from Waseda Honjo Senior High School, Mr. K went on to study law at Waseda University.WID Hanakoganei XNUMXK. lives alone in a dormitory. He tries to balance his studies at the Faculty of Law with morning practice at 5am for the lacrosse club. Excellent access to the Higashifushimi campus and a fulfilling dormitory life support him every day. With the dream of "working overseas in the future" in mind, we asked K., who continues to grow based at WID, about his university life.
The journey to Waseda University
Waseda Honjo, where I went to school, was said to have the widest commuting area in Japan, and students from various regions gathered there. There were many returnees, and I was able to meet people with a wide variety of backgrounds. This environment was a great stimulus for me.
During my high school days, I spent my time focusing on club activities, and I have fond memories of sports festivals, cultural festivals, and school trips. I especially remember the club competitions.
I had been thinking about going to Waseda University since I entered high school. Honjo Senior High School has a system where students can choose their preferred faculty based on their grades over the course of three years. With my grandfather's advice, I chose the Faculty of Law. We filled out a survey in December or January, and the results were announced in late January, but I didn't know the results until the new year, which made me very nervous.
A new challenge from the university
I joined the lacrosse club at university as a new challenge. I was on the baseball team in high school, but in the final tournament, we lost to a home run by a freshman on the opposing team, and I felt like I had reached my limit in continuing with baseball at university. So I participated in various trial sessions at university, and chose lacrosse because it was the most fun.
Lacrosse is really interesting. Since people from various sports come together, we have players with the unique characteristics of each sport. I think this diversity is what makes lacrosse such an interesting sport.
Actively working with WID
The biggest reason I chose WID Hanakoganei 2 for living alone was the easy access to the Higashifushimi campus, where my club activities are practiced. I was also considering the Higashifushimi dormitory and WISH, but in the end I decided on this place.
On days when we have morning practice, I wake up at 5am to get ready and leave the dorm before 5:XNUMXam. On days when we have practice, I make my own rice balls and try to bring them with me. After practice, I head to class. Some people go to class after morning practice, while others continue practicing until around noon. Those who have to leave practice early due to class may practice on their own in the afternoon.
What I especially like about living in the dormitory is the food. On days when there is no morning practice, I eat breakfast at the dormitory, and I eat dinner there every day. The fried chicken they served the other day was especially delicious.
On my days off, I go out to dinner with my dorm mates or play basketball in a nearby park. There's a laid back atmosphere that only a boys' dorm can offer, and sometimes I go to the bathroom almost naked (laughs).
The room was larger than I expected. The shared areas such as the toilets are cleaned, which is helpful, and the dorm manager and staff are kind, so I can live here with peace of mind.
Study and future prospects
At university, I am mainly studying criminal law, civil law, and constitutional law. I am also learning Chinese and English. I chose Chinese because I wanted to try a language I had never studied before.
I am considering working abroad in the future. My experience living in Indonesia gave me a first-hand feel for the charms and cultural differences of each country, which was a big inspiration and motivated me to work abroad.
I am currently working hard towards a lacrosse match in December, while also trying to balance my studies. Living at WID has been extremely helpful in terms of making effective use of my time. There are limitations when commuting from home, but I feel that living here has allowed me to secure time. Using WID as a base, I would like to continue taking on various challenges.
